Breeding Successes Summarised

The events described below summarize the breeding efforts prior to- and post ANP being erected to date:

  • 2007 Pylon Nest – incubation commenced during 2 – 9 June – raised a chick to fledging.
  • 2008 Pylon Nest – incubation commenced during 1 – 7 May – raised a chick to fledging.
  • 2009 SANP – incubation commenced during 19 – 26 April – breeding failure, both eggs addled.
  • 2010 SANP – incubation commenced during 1 – 4 April. Hatching of eggs on 16 & 19 May, cainism complete by 22 May. 

Male disappeared, last seen 26 September. 

  • 2011 SANP – no replacement male, female was alone for 21 months and 13 days.
  • 2012 SANP – female alone for 21 months and 13 days. 

New male attracted to MF on 9 July, too late for breeding.  

  • 2013 SANP – Incubation commenced during 17 – 24 April, hatching 31May. 
  • 2014 SANP – Incubation commenced on 8 May with the second egg laid on 12 May, hatching 20 June.
  • 2015 SANP – incubation commenced on 13 May with the second egg laid on 17 May, hatching 26 June.
  • 2016 SANP – incubation commenced on 9 April with second egg laid on 12 April, first hatching 24 May with second hatching on 28 May. Cainism lasted three days ending 30 May. “Witsie” fledged 17 August after 86 days on the nest. Eaglet was banded on 7 July at 45 days with bright orange band no G23265 classified as a male.
  • 2017 SANP – First attempt: Incubation commenced on 6 April with second egg laid on 10 April. First hatching estimate 23 May. Eagles abandoned incubation and both eggs were retrieved and sent to Dr Robert Campbell for autopsy. Report indicated that both eggs were infertile. Second attempt: Incubation commenced on 29 July with second egg laid on 2 August. First hatching estimate on 11 September. Eagles again abandoned incubation on 20 September and both eggs retrieved and sent to Onderstsepoort Veterinary Hospital. Report indicated that both eggs were infertile.

Female disappears and last seen on 26 October.

Replacement female brought in by male on 8 November, his estimated age was approx. 3 years old.

  • 2018 SANP – incubation commenced on 18 April with second egg laid on 22 April. First hatching 3 June (46 days) with second hatching on 7 June. Cainism lasting 3 days ending 10 June. “Storm” was ringed G34411 on 24 July and fledged on 24 August only 82 days old – possibly blown off nest by strong wind.
  • 2019 SANP – incubation commenced on 15 April with second egg laid on 19 April.  First hatching on 31 May (46 days) with second hatching on 4 June. Cainism lasting 3 days ending 7 June. “Cybelo” fledged on 24 August only 85 days old. First aggression noted on 26 September. Cyb was last observed on the far Eastern side of the farm on 10 November.
